Kart racers, Robby Mott and Phil Carlson also won their respective group in the Formula Mazda Russell Series. Round one of the series saw the racers being split into four groups. Track conditions were a factor on the day for first few groups as rain soaked many portions of the track.<FONT SIZE="1" COLOR="#000000" FACE="Arial" > </FONT>The race marked Hill's first appearance in a formula race. He has been racing karts for the last six years and in June 2000 entered into the Russell Racing school to learn to be a race car driving instructor.
